Muriel Spark coverIn 2005, two years before her death, the great Scottish writer Muriel Spark received an honorary degree from AUP. Nearly ten years on, a long-awaited tribute to her work has appeared, edited by Robert Hosmer of Williams College and published by the University of Notre Dame Press. It contains essays by – among others – Barbara Epler, Gabriel Josipovici, Frank Kermode, John Lanchester, Doris Lessing, and John Updike. Dan Gunn’s essay in the volume is entitled “The Lightness of Muriel Spark’s Novels”. It opens with a reminiscence of Muriel Spark at AUP, before going on to discuss her two novels, Not To Disturb and Territorial Rights.
