This article in the Guardian newspaper seems to me to give one good reason why writing and speaking well is important. It is difficult to think as badly as this if you are trained to express yourself clearly, and to consider the complexities of the world.

Although perhaps there is a kind of brutal avant-garde poetry in Sean Hannity’s wild incoherence: ‘Do you not … look, if you’ve got 40% or 50% of the population living in poverty and 30% of the young people – you know, ah, 60% of the population is under 30 and 90% of them can’t find work – there seems to me that there is some democratic motivations behind some of the protest.’
